Monthly Themes for 2017-2018
December-Hope
Hope is resilient, enduring, courageous, and occasionally bold. It is a shape shifter that keeps adapting to emerging circumstances. The only thing left in Pandora’s box after the lid was shut again was hope, and it has always been enough. Barbara Kingsolver wrote, “The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is to live inside that hope.”
January-Justice
As someone said, justice, properly understood is love. The following from the Jewish tradition is a com-mentary on the words of the prophet Micah (6:8): “Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.”
February-Love
Hosea Ballou, a 19th century Universalist minister said, “If we agree in love, there is no disagreement that can do us any injury, but if we do not, no other agreement can do us any good.” Unitarian minister James Vila Blake wrote, “Love is the spirit of this church….” This emphasis on love is grounded in covenant, the promises that we make to stand on the side of love with each other and with the world
March-Humility
One dictionary defines humility as the state of being modest, respectful, and egoless. To cultivate hu-mility is to become an architect of mutual compassion. To cultivate humility is to see grief, despair, confusion, and so many other things in another and reach out with your heart and your hand. True humility is a sign of maturity. It takes seriously the inherent worth and value of every person.
April-Transformation
Our faith understands growth as a life-long process. Transformation is second-order change. It typically involves new learning and new ways of seeing things. It consists of profound, qualitative changes in who we are and what we do; changes that make a significant difference. It is irreversible because the avenues to returning to the old way are no longer viable options, and we wouldn’t go back even if we could.
May-Transcendence
In everyday language, transcendence has the sense of “going beyond.” Theologian Paul Tillich spoke of both the Ground of Being (Where do you stand and why? What are your roots? What values connect you with the depths of life? What anchors you?) & Ultimate Concern (What transcends you? What commands your loyalty? What do you live for? What would you die for?). When grounded, we can fly.
