Social Justice Committee News
January 30, 2024
HUUF attendees: Michael Meuers, Sarah Baker, Nancy Mason, Candy Roberts, Mike Bjerk, Minna Furfaro
Meeting with Katie (MUUSJA) on ZOOM
Katie started the meeting discussing our last time meeting with her. We reviewed asset mapping as we discussed last meeting. The 3-step
approach.
Step 1: Congregational Mapping
Step 2: JUMPSTART your justice Work with MUUSJA:
2. Human (people bring what they want to bring)
3. Financial:
Katie commented on how we could work with RE (as an example) in gathering more info.
Percentage of weekly offertory, percent of operating budget, individual givers, access to grant funding and connection to corporate/community support
Summary: Katie suggested that the mapping is a good beginning. Community assets where we could identify and create a document that would allow us to respond to a need.
Katie offered some methods to getting started, including everyone identifying their talents and Sarah wondered if her (Katie or Alison) offer of help in encouraging members and friends to sign up.
Nancy asked about the next step and was curious how we could begin the process.
Katie suggested we “do what works well for us”
After Katie left the meeting we discussed the April 21st service

Meeting with Katie (MUUSJA) on ZOOM
Katie started the meeting discussing our last time meeting with her. We reviewed asset mapping as we discussed last meeting. The 3-step
approach.
Step 1: Congregational Mapping
- Human, physical, and financial assets
- Respond quickly and effectively.
- Be proactive in enabling essential organizing to occur.
- Avoid burnout. (especially when a couple people are carrying the bulk of the work)
- Help to identify untapped potential in your justice work
- ASSET Mapping:
- Physical: what can you offer in terms of space, meeting rooms, chairs, copy machines, etc.
Step 2: JUMPSTART your justice Work with MUUSJA:
- Computer, Child Care Space, Cars, Vans, Parking lot, Playground. Etc (brainstorm as a group HUUF’s ability to note physical space)
- Candy noted that we are providing Bemidji Pride with meeting space here at the facility.
2. Human (people bring what they want to bring)
- Display on chart paper this information that you gather about the group. Put on the walls around the room. People identify their talents and gifts
- Visual Artists
- Musicians
- Lawyers
- Writers
- Teachers
- Medical Personnel
- Tech
- Communications
- Photographers
- Fundraisers
3. Financial:

September 2023:
The social justice committee will be meeting on September 24th following the service and gathering in the RE room at 11:15.
The agenda begins with a review of the PRIDE Festival held in August and ideas for next year. We will also have a discussion of a potential social justice sponsored workshop this fall on Culture. This was suggested after the July meeting with Michael Meuers regarding culture. Looking forward to this coming year!
The Pride Festival co-committee chairs (Ruth Baker and Minna Furfaro) organized a wonderful booth to represent HUUF this year with a crafts table (well attended) and our sales of T-shirts and Pride Flags. We were joined by a MUUSJA member, Rev. Leslie Mills, who brought a powerful energy, and several HUUF members who graciously gave their time to help greet PRIDE folks with their love, energy, and smiles.
We have 19 t-shirts and 6 PRIDE flags left. They will be available for purchase at our social justice area at the Peace Center.
